Paparella Ear, Head & Neck Institute, founded by Dr. Michael Paparella over twenty years ago, has earned a reputation as one of the most innovative and compassionate ENT practices in the Twin Cities and Upper Midwest. Our board certified and fellowship-trained physicians, and our entire clinical staff, pride themselves on offering the most comprehensive care in a thoughtful and caring manner.

Michael Paparella, MD

Michael Paparella, MD, our founder, took his BS and MD at the University of Michigan. After serving in Europe, he became a member of the faculty at Harvard Medical School, then at Ohio State University. From 1967 to 1984, he was Professor and Chairman of the University of Minnesota’s Department of Otolaryngology, leaving to found this clinic. He has actively practiced otology (care of ears) and otolaryngology (ears, head and neck) for 40-plus years and remains active in research and education. Dr. Paparella was named as one of the "Best in the Field of Otolaryngology" in Mpls. St. Paul Magazine, Minnesota Monthly, and most importantly, Castle Connolly's America's Top Doctors® for the past 20-plus years. He has authored/edited over 655 scientific publications and 65 books, including many on the topics of Meniere’s disease and chronic ear infections. He has also trained 300 ENT doctors, including 28 Professors and Chairmen.

Oleg Froymovich, MD

Oleg Froymovich, MD, Board Certified in Sleep Medicine and Fellowship-trained Physician, received his BS from Columbia University in 1984 and his MD from Mount Sinai Medical School in 1988. After internship and residency training in general surgery, he finished his residency in otolaryngology at SUNY Buffalo in 1993 and a fellowship in otology and neurotology at the Paparella Ear, Head & Neck Institute in 1994. Now a partner at our clinic, he is board certified in otolaryngology and sleep medicine and has special interest in sinus disease, endoscopic sinus surgery, management of disorders of the voice, and hearing, sleep and balance medicine. He has published many peer-reviewed articles and presented courses on such work at meetings of the American Academy of Otolaryngology.

Dr. Oleg Froymovich

Norm Berlinger, MD

Dr. Norm Berlinger received his B.S. and M.D. degrees from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He then received extensive post-graduate training in both otolaryngology and internal medicine at the University of Minnesota, the Sloan-Kettering Institute and Memorial Hospital for Cancer in New York City, and the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Returning to Minneapolis, he enjoyed an active academic practice at the University of Minnesota and a community practice in the Minneapolis suburbs, specializing in pediatric and otologic problems. Dr. Berlinger also obtained a graduate degree in counseling psychology in order to better care for patients with emotional components to their illness. He has made a specialty of treating and rehabilitating patients with tinnitus. Begins seeing patients March 1, 2016.

William Avery, DO

William Avery, DO, specializes in conditions of the ear, nose and throat. Dr. Avery began practicing general otolaryngology for the Paparella Ear Head & Neck Institute in 2013. He is also currently seeing allergy patients. Dr. Avery previously practiced with Sanford Health in Sioux Falls, SD. Helping patients understand their options and choose the most appropriate one is key to Dr. Avery's philosophy of care. Dr. Avery attended medical school and did his residency at the Chicago School of Osteopathic Medicine.

Carol Klitzke, MS, CCC/SLP

Carol Klitzke is a Speech-Language Pathologist and Voice Specialist. She brings more than 30 years experience to the specialty care of voice, larynx and swallowing disorders. Carol’s experience involves teaching, training and consulting for music educators, performers, clergy, instructors and graduate students. She has taken advanced training in videostroboscopy techniques, Vocal Cord Dysfunction and Lee Silverman Voice Training. Carol’s presentation audiences include the VoiceCare Network courses, national and state Music Educators and ACDA conferences, Sweet Adelines’ national/regional conferences and Minnesota school districts’ meetings and numerous professional training sessions. Carol recently worked with Leon Thurman and Liz Grefsheim of the VoiceCare Network, to develop the Voice Conditioning CD. Her credentials include a Master of Science degree in Speech Pathology from the University of Wisconsin, Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and SLP-Minnesota license. She has been an adjunct instructor at St. Cloud State University, and a guest lecturer at University of Wisconsin River Falls. She is on the faculty and Board of the VoiceCare Network and a member of the Minnesota Voice Colloquium.



Marisa Bushman, AuD

Marisa Bushman received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences from San Diego State University in 2010. She went on to complete her doctorate degree in Audiology at A.T. Still University in Arizona. Marisa’s professional goal is to help people achieve a better sense of well being through improved hearing and communication. Marisa loves all things Audiology, and has a particular passion for cochlear implants and hearing aids.


Jessica Connolly Russow, AuD

Dr. Jessica Connolly Russow AuD received her Doctor of Audiology from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities in June 2015; Master of Arts in Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities in 2014; and Bachelor of Arts in Biology, Society, and Environment from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities in 2011. She is a Licensed Audiologist in the state of Minnesota. Jessica is a member of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association and has her Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A). She joined Paparella Ear, Head & Neck Institute in 2015. Jessica is passionate and dedicated to providing excellent Audiology services and relates well to people with hearing loss as she has a hearing loss in the right ear from birth. Her clinical interests include amplification with hearing aids, cochlear implants and bone anchored hearing aids (BAHA’s), pediatric audiology due to her experience at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, and teaching future audiologists. Jessica enjoys spending time with her family, husband and black lab puppy.



Joe Neve, AuD, CCC-A

Joseph Neve received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration: Finance and Marketing from Marquette University in 1991, Master's in Audiology at the University of Minnesota in 1996 and completed his Doctorate in Audiology at the University of Florida in 2008. He is a Licensed Audiologist in both Minnesota and Wisconsin. He joined Paparella Ear, Head & Neck Institute in 2015. Over his 20+ year career in the hearing healthcare field, Joe has helped thousands of people reconnect with their family and friends through better hearing. Joe has a special connection to his patients since he has worn hearing instruments since 1996 and knows of their limitations but also the benefits hearing instruments bring to one’s quality of life. His clinical interests include evaluation and treatment of vestibular disorders, tinnitus management, and hearing instruments. Joe enjoys spending time with his wife and four children.

Katie Awoyinka, Audiology Extern

Katherine Awoyinka, Audiology Extern, received her Bachelor of Arts in Communication Disorders, with a minor in studio art, from Minnesota State University, Mankato. She is currently in the fourth year of her audiology doctoral program through the University of South Dakota. Katie’s professional goals include working towards minimizing any remaining stigmatization of individuals using hearing assistive technology and improving patients’ quality of life through improved communication. Outside of the clinic, she enjoys spending time with family and friends and creating various types of artwork. Katie is very excited to be a part of the PEHNI team and to be back in the Twin Cities.
