When your patient is not ready for a hearing aid
“How much could it really help?”
This is a common question asked by many people
trying to decide if they want to purchase a hearing aid. The short answer is YES! In
most cases, hearing aids are successful at helping people hear their loved ones and not
have to repeat “What?” or “Huh?” all the time. A hearing loss prevents people from
receiving all the audible information around them. A hearing aid helps them access this
missing information. Take, for example, the following sentence: _ _ a _ _ / _ o _ / _ i n
n _ _ ? Without more information, the sentence is too difficult to understand. Since they
only receive part of the information, there can be misunderstanding or a break down in
communication. By using a hearing aid, the sentence can be understood and responded
to appropriately. Thus, the sentence can be heard as: What’s for dinner?
“I am too young to get hearing aids.”
Many patients feel this way however hearing loss
happens to all ages. Whether you are 7 months old or 102 years old it doesn't matter. The
quicker you get fit with aids the better. Research shows that individuals with hearing
loss who do nothing about it lose their hearing faster compared to those who get fit right
away. Your hearing organ needs stimulation in order to keep functioning properly. Life
is too short to miss out on conversations with your friends, family, children, spouse, or
grandchildren. Get back to the hearing world and enjoy conversations in even the most
difficult listening environments.
